MUCCLUHAN’S TETRAD

Medium: Writing

Enhance: Writing allows for the recording of information in a way that is far more permanent, transmissible, and less fallible than human memory or something like pictography. It allows for the communication of complex ideas without the need for a face-to-face conversation.

Reverse: As writing becomes more complex as well as greater in scale the transmission of the ideas within becomes more and more inaccessible to the majority of the population who either cannot or will not engage with those ideas.

Retrieves: Within writing we see the recurrence of traits like the preservation of information, the telling of stories, and history.

Obsolesces: Writing reduces the need to completely rely on memorization, oral traditions, and pictographic ways to communicate and pass down information.
