DECOLONIZE DESIGN

What Does It Mean to Decolonize Design? Dismantling design history 101 —- Anoushka Khandwala — June 5th, 2019

QUESTIONS:

  1. Does one need to step back and give another designer an opportunity or rather as a designer, should one take the opportunity to immerse themselves with the group and educate themselves so they can produce the best possible work?

  2. What determines respectful formatting of an image?

  3. Is it more important to respect and use certain imagery correctly, or is it better to try and push the limits and boundaries of imagery for an innovative design?

  4. Is it, if at all, appropriate to insert yourself into designing for something you aren’t educated on, and how far can you involve yourself within said design until it may become disingenuous?

  5. Did human reliance on rectangular forms result from urbanization and the need to make use of as much space as possible? As some non-urbanized cultures still center their design around other shapes i.e. circles.

  6. What constitutes “Western design practices,” and has globalization prevented us from developing a set of design practices truly independent from Western ones?
