<image:title>BLOG - SEMIOTIC SQUARE - GROUP WORK: GRACE, CARLOS, MAX, IVAN</image:title>
<image:caption>For our semiotic square, we chose to have “running” be our assertion. To contrary this, we chose “sitting” as our negation. To complement the negation, we have "waiting" as our non-assertion. The contrary of this is our non-negation, which we have as “moving.” Running and moving are complimentary to one another, as are sitting and waiting. Moving is contradictory towards sitting, just like waiting is contradictory towards moving. All combined, these elements satisfy the semiotic square.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - SIGN TYPES - NUTRITION FACTS LABEL: INDEX + SYMBOL</image:title>
<image:caption>The nutrition facts label is indexical . The label is communicating to the user the actual contents of the food, specifically to the food within its package. Additionally, the structure of the label itself is essentially a small index. It is an index of the breakdown of different nutrient facts specific to the food within the package. The index contains information like Calories, Fats, Cholesterol, Sugars, Carbohydrates, Fibers, Proteins, Vitamins and more. The label also highlights elements of the food that are not directly reflective from looking at the food itself. To further the idea, more symbolic elements can be found within this label through the words used to describe the different elements we call “Nutrients.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - SIGN TYPES - HANDICAP LOGO: SYMBOL + ICON</image:title>
<image:caption>The handicap logo could be both symbolic and iconic. Iconically, the handicap logo is connected to the idea of disability through its depiction of a person in a wheelchair. Symbolically, we have learned to associate this icon with those who have disabilities or areas of restricted use. The repetition of this sign creates a learned association towards the symbol being reflective of it being areas only for those who possess the icon. Iconically the logo is perceived as a figure in a wheelchair. This chosen quality used to depict the icon is not reflective of the current definition to which we define one with a disability/disabilities. This icon has established an assumption for our society that in order to be disabled, you need to be wheelchair bound or unable to walk. While it can be viewed as symbolic and iconic, and technically the icon helped establish the symbolic qualities, the icon can be derogatory and unreflective of the logo’s true nature.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - SIGN TYPES - STOVETOP TEMP. CONTROL: SYMBOL + ICON</image:title>
<image:caption>I found the stovetop temperature control to be symbolic. The dots, numbers and words “Hi” and Lo” are symbolic of different levels of heat. Using “lo” and “hi” as our heat extremes, symbolic of the words low and high, the numbers and dots in between are symbolic of heat levels varying heat levels. One would assume the 1 and 10 were replaced with “Lo” and “Hi” since numbers 1-10 have no correlation to heat. Additionally the temperature control knobs are symbolic to us via convention. Using an oven is a learned or self taught behavior, maybe a little of both. Ovens vary in design, so one user may not be as familiar with this particular interface as they would be with their own personal one. Small icons of the stovetop are depicted to help the user identify which control adjusts which burner. The dual burner uses a icon with one circle and then another with two, to determine which side of the knob associates to which burner.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - CRITICAL THINKING - WHAT WOULD THE WORLD BE LIKE WITHOUT IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS?</image:title>
<image:caption>If we were to rid the world of house and building numbers, the world would enter a state of chaos. Without the use of numerical ordering we could lose structure amongst society. We use numbers to label houses, apartments, buildings, and rooms. These numbers help us create structure. We are able to more efficiently draw maps, find locations, share information and more using the labeling structure of number identification. Imagine a society without these numbers. Trying to find directions to a specific house without having a number, trying to find a classroom, or deliver a package. Humans would find a way to try and create organization without these numbers, but the importance of these should not go unnoticed.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - CRITICAL THINKING - ARE THERE TIMES WHERE WORD PLACEMENT BECOMES MORE RECOGNIZABLE THAN ARCHITECTURE? —— CAN A BUILDING BECOME A LANDMARK VIA TYPOGRAPHY?</image:title>
<image:caption>Landmarks and architecture are key components of directions and mental mapping, yet we have reached a place in society where some typefaces have become more identifiable than the architecture or landmark itself. Typefaces in logos and other markers have passed the importance of architecture alone. Landmark is defined as “an object, such as a stone or tree that marks the boundary of land; a conspicuous object on land that marks a locality; an anatomical structure used as a point of orientation in locating other structures; an event or development that marks a turning point or a stage; a structure, such as a building of unusual historical and usually aesthetic interest; especially, one that is officially designated and set aside for preservation” (1). A landmark does not need to be physical. The use of typography is logos has become more identifiable as landmarks in some situations. For example, the "PLAZA ART” logo painted on the side of the wall has become a prominent identifier for locating the store. Not only is it now used to locate the store, but due to the visibility, it has become an identifier when talking location and reference points to the area. This can also be seen via the Domino Sugar building in New York City. While Domino Sugar ceased working there in the early 2000s, the building still maintains a name in association to Domino.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - CRITICAL THINKING - HOW DID THE 7 SEGMENT LED DISPLAY & DOT MATRIX IMPACT TYPOGRAPHY?</image:title>
<image:caption>Without the use of digital fonts like the 7 segment led display or the dot matrix, our appliances and machines would lack the interface connecting our intentions to the material world. I feel numbers are often neglected in typography. I have personally experienced such neglect when using typefaces that lack a number set. Numbers are important !! We often overlook one of the most important typefaces of number, the 7 segment led display or the dot matrix. These typefaces connect us to the material tools we use on a day to day basis.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - EVERYDAY REPRESENTATIONS - NUTRITION FACTS LABEL</image:title>
<image:caption>The nutrition label functions as a way to perceive what is being eaten. The nutrition fact label is found on almost all packaged food products. They were urged into existence by the government in 1969 and policies about formatting structure were established by 1972 (1). According to the CDC, using a nutrition label “can help you choose foods for a healthy diet” (2). The nutrition label is successful in helping provide people a basis of understanding towards the food they are consuming or plan to consume. The habitual repetition of the nutrition label (representation) has created trust amongst consumers and society. Yet, while we put the blind faith of our health into the constraints of this white box, we fail to recognize that maybe these facts are distorted. These facts that we see as valid are actually susceptible to up to 20 % of variation from what is actually in the product. Additionally, there can be a range in product quality between facilities. Lastly, nutrition labels and products are not regularly tested and updated (3). The deception these labels hold are disguised by the years of trust society has placed into them.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - EVERYDAY REPRESENTATIONS - HANDICAP LOGO</image:title>
<image:caption>The handicap logo represents people with disabilities. The logo is representative of a figure in a wheel chair, sometimes overlaid with a blue rectangle. Officially known as the International Symbol of Access, it was designed in 1969 (4). The handicap logo is successful in identifying areas designed to accommodate those with disabilities. In order to qualify for a handicap tag, a person can have a physical, mental or visual disability. A few specific examples are the inability to walk over 200 ft without taking a break, the use of a brace/crutch/support to walk, heart conditions, lung conditions, deafness, blindness, and more (5). The representation of a person in a wheel chair, whether adopting the newer format of forward oriented motion (6) or not, still enforces a visual distortion about those with disability. The use of a wheelchair reinforces an idea that a disabled person needs to be in a wheelchair, when in reality thousands of people have disabilities that we cannot see. This representation enforces the notion of disability bias to the public nationwide. Additionally, I think the handicap logo has a subtle lean into ableism. Ableism is defined as “set of beliefs or practices that devalue and discriminate against people with physical, intellectual, or psychiatric disabilities” (7). While the intention of this representation is not to support ableism, this logo places a label on people that makes them more susceptible to stereotyping. This representation for disability limits our perception of how we view disabled people.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - EVERYDAY REPRESENTATIONS - STOVETOP TEMP. CONTROL</image:title>
<image:caption>The stovetop temperature control represents the heat or power setting on a stovetop. There are ovens with stovetops, stovetops on countertops, electric stoves, gas stoves and more. With such diversity, it is understandable that there was desire to regulate a way to control temperature for separate burners on the same product and across product variations. This representation, while simple to use and understand, actually distorts our perception of heat and temperature. The dial filters out the physical temperature. In this example, the temperature scale is from Lo-Hi, with numbers and dots in between, none of which give us any accurate reference to the temperature. This could range from number 1-10, Lo-High or a mix of both. With variations across ovens from wear and tear to design and conception, the level 4 on one oven could vary drastically from another. With this distortion of perception, without an appropriate cooking thermometer, it is nearly impossible to know what heat you are truly cooking at outside of Lo-4-Hi.</image:caption>
